Welcome to the Premier of Greytown Girl

Reviews

GREYTOWN GIRL AT THE Avalon Cinema. It was wonderful to see so much of Durban’s local talent hold their place alongside giants like Jack Devnarain and Emmanuel Castis.

As we reflect on the 30th year of our Constitutional Democracy the film is a reminder about just how the act of falling in love could defy apartheid and all other forms of social, religious and cultural prejudice.

The story of Meena & Eddie is both poignant and inspiring. So too are layers of love between father & daughter, caregiver & child in foster care. It’s also a beautiful tale about how when love is turned into over protectiveness it becomes in itself a debilitating burden.

I have no doubt that this film inspired by the true story of Meena & Eddie’s relationship will warm the cockles of many hearts. It will leave lots of lumps in many throats. It will open up enormous opportunities to honour and celebrate how victory triumphs over adversity.

It was an even more special treat to see Meena & Eddie travel all the way from Boston to attend the premiere of the film in Durban.

Late post as Life was Lifing….

So we attended the Greytown Girl - The movie last Wednesday at Suncoast Cinema

A beautiful love story filled with determination and grace while going against all odds to win in life. A tale of resilience, inspiration, courage and above all else, love.

South African cinema always tugs at my heartstrings. I am in awe at the immense talent of our artists and more so of the quality of the productions. We are extremely underrated in the #movieindustry and I think that’s it’s perhaps time for us to change the narrative and acknowledge and celebrate this phenomenal industry as it should be.

Grey Town Girl is now showing in movie houses nationwide. Be sure to see this amazing film and allow yourselves to be touched by the beauty of the Kwa- Zulu Natal landscape as much as the the beautiful and inspiring love story of Meena and Eddie, a love that transcends distance, disability, race, culture and division.

Wonderful to see my good friends Uveka Rangappa and Emmanuel Castis on the big screen bringing their complex and intriguing characters to life. A stellar performance by Jack Devnarain as the caring, loving and protective dad who had the courage to stand up to Apartheid police during very turbulent times.

Congratulations to the fabulous cast and crew of the AWESOME production. May the film go on to be a huge success

I had the privilege of attending the premier of the movie #GreytownGirl at SUNCOAST Durban CineCentre last night and it was definitely a night with the stars! This heartwarming movie opens tomorrow, 13th September 2024 in cinema's across the country. Here are my thoughts on the movie :

Greytown Girl is a true story of a small-town South African girl, Meena, who seen as a burden because of her physical limitations. She goes on to build her life with tremendous bravery and creates a love story that crosses continents through letters.

The movie is made up of some good performances and well written drama and humour which everyone can identify with. The movie is essentially a coming of age story that speaks of hope, trust, good karma and of course love.

I loved the that despite having lead Indian characters, there were no characters that were written as overbearing stereotypical Indians. This type of movie making is also a step in the right direction - moving away from turning Indians into caricatures on screen for comic relief and showing us as "normal beings" with mature and relatable issues.

This ode to living your dreams is showing at cinemas across the country and I highly recommend watching it . Support local and help our movie industry grow.

The movie features the talents of #SanamSitaram #JackDevnarain #EmmanuelCastis #RahulRai #ShaleeniRanchhod #UvekaRangappa #NatashiaPortrag #LindaSokhulu and a host of local and international stars.

An amazing SA production that steers away from the traditional slapstick comedy to bring a rich and heart-warming portrayal of real people and real history to our screens.

Different people may take away different experiences from this story and that is only what adds to its magic.

Well worth the watch.

Sanam Sitaram's portrayal of Meena is nothing short of breathtaking. She brings such emotional authenticity to the role that it's hard not to feel every bit of her joy, pain and determination. The character of Meena, an Indian South African woman facing the turbulent landscape of the apartheid era, showcases a journey of personal loss and perseverance. Sitaram’s performance was so powerful that it felt less like acting and more like reliving history through her eyes. Her nuanced portrayal of grief and determination is what gave the film its soul.

GreyTown Girl stands as a testament to the power of South African storytelling, particularly through the lens of its Indian South African community. The film doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of the era, but it also celebrates the strength of those who lived through it. As an Indian South African, I felt incredibly proud to see our stories, struggles, and heritage represented with such authenticity and respect.

A Mother Speaks of the Impact of Greytown Girl

Greytown Girl is a movie that is based on a true love story set during the most difficult times in South Africa, our apartheid era.

It was such an honour to be apart of such an amazing production that show cased our heritage and the struggles that we as Indians had to go through.

This movie brought emotions and tears in so many aspects, you can relate to it as a proudly South African patriot, you can relate to it as a Mother, you can relate to it as an Indian, you can relate to it as a Mother who's child is born with a congenital defect who's hoping for a miracle, you can relate to love.

Thank you to Rani Sitaram for giving Sanaah the privilege to portray baby Meena. Sanaah at just 4 months old, born with a defect like the real-life Meena, the struggle was felt when watching this movie.

My highlight was meeting my childhood icons Jack Devnarain and Emmanuel Castis who I watched growing up in Isidingo. Jack Devnarain held the Indian flag up high for us for many years and it was such an honour to meet him and see what a wonderful person he is and his love for kids.

Meeting the other little Meena's and the rest of the cast and crew was an experience in itself.

If you can, please watch this movie in cinemas, not because my Sanaah is in it but because it's a South African production.

I don't know what the future holds for Sanaah in the acting field, but let's cheers to this one!
