Acting, for me, has always been about accessing parts of myself in new ways, infusing characters with an intuitive humanity and understanding their essence. It is about connecting with truth. And it is always play.
This was naturally the way I approached playing Meena. I did not start only with her disability. The metal braces on my legs and crutches that she would use to walk allowed me to very easily slip into her physicality. This meant that my focus could be on her heart and her experience.
Her softness, love, and fierce loyalty drew me to her. The writing subtlety illuminated her quiet, unwavering strength and grace. Hema's striking "girl boss" sensibilities allowed for a yin/yang contrast in the way both of these women came together, finding commonality and connection in both their shared and unique experiences.
Meena's truth lay deeply embedded in her day to day family values, as well as her dreams. One was not more valuable than the other and this was important to me when anchoring into the character.
The most important aspect of playing Meena is that "Greytown Girl" is a deeply human story. A story of love, friendship, family and adversity infused simultaneously with humour and joy. Through Meena's story, we can experience the tapestry of life in all its shades and colours.
